The Environmental Protection and Compliance Division-Waste Management Programs Group is seeking a trustworthy and enthusiastic Environmental Professional to provide support to the Nuclear Process Infrastructure Division (NPI-DO) and its groups. NPI-DO ensures safe, efficient, and compliant waste management of all radioactive and hazardous waste generated at the Technical Area (TA) 55 Plutonium Facility, Chemistry and Metallurgy Research building, TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility, Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building, Transuranic Waste Facility, and Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing Facility. This position will work closely with other members of the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) Team to identify, interpret, and implement applicable regulations; support the development of plans and permit modification requests; collect and report compliance and performance data; transmit vital information; submit required reports; and support the preparation of notices and responses to regulatory agencies. This position is expected to attract individuals with a knowledge of RCRA permitting and hazardous, solid waste, transuranic, and low-level waste regulations.
Environmental Professional 3 ($101,700 - $168,200)
The selected candidate may interpret and implement relevant federal, state, and local environmental regulations and executive orders, including regulatory agreements. Provide leadership to Environmental Professional Level 1-2. Can participate in an Integrated Project Team representing environmental requirements that are different from their area of expertise. May be responsible for the fiscal management on compliance projects. Oversees and develops processes necessary for ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory requirements (i.e., deliverables tracking and develop deliverables preparation).
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Working knowledge of environmental regulations, with an emphasis on hazardous waste and permitting.
- Working knowledge of used oil, universal waste, satellite accumulation areas, central accumulation areas, and permitted unit requirements.
- Experience performing site inspections and/or audits of operations and facilities.
- Experience performing technical analyses and/or reviews of characterization data to determine waste shipping, acceptance, and/or processing criteria.
- Experience performing procedure reviews to ensure compliance with requirements.
- The ability to work successfully as part of a team and achieve team objectives and the ability to deal with difficult deadlines and short time frames.
- Experience and skill in communicating (both written and verbal) in a clear concise manner to superiors, peers, customers, and other personnel.
- Ability to obtain a DOE 'Q' clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.
Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Proven teamwork orientation and consultation skills sufficient to partner with client organizations to implement sound environmental practices.
- Advanced knowledge of project management, fiscal responsibility, schedule and budget development and execution.
- Advanced knowledge of permit reviews.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience with environmental regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Advanced knowledge of common and unique work hazards, occupational safety practices, operating configuration, and lock-out/tag out policies and procedures.
- Experience conducting research and investigating alternative solutions and recommending solutions on problems affecting environmental protection. Experience conceptualizing and communicating major elements of environmental protection to both technical and non-technical personnel.
- Experience preparing and presenting environmental protection reports.
Desired Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of low-level and transuranic radioactive waste regulations and management.
- Familiarity with nuclear operations.
- General knowledge of and experience with related environmental fields (e.g., water quality compliance, air quality compliance, Toxic Substances Control Act, and Solid Waste).
- Advanced knowledge of the Laboratory's environmental protection policies, practices, and procedures.
- Strong background in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
- Active Q clearance.
Education/Experience at lower level: Environmental Professional 2 position requires a bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Environmental Professional 3 position requires a bachelor's degree and 8 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post-graduate coursework may be desirable.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
