The RadGeochemistry team at Los Alamos National Laboratory invites applications for Graduate Student Intern positions. Los Alamos National Laboratory solves problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns, and enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. You will be joining a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers working at the forefront of problems related to energy and national security. You will be involved in projects focused on the study of actinide transport in the environment, high temperature thermodynamics of aqueous and solid species/minerals containing actinides or critical metals, development of models for natural critical material ore formation and critical material extraction technologies, development of technologies for in situ mining, collecting data required for safety assessment of nuclear waste repositories, and national security-related projects. Tasks will include performing hands-on experiments with nuclear materials; testing and development of experimental protocols; collecting data using in-house designed experimental systems; data analyses and data management; publishing papers, presenting at the conferences and assisting with technical reports.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Basic skills for safe operation in chemical and experimental laboratories
- Willingness to learn the basics of spectroscopic techniques and development of custom experimental tools
- Strong technical communication skills, as demonstrated by technical presentations, reports, thesis, and/or scientific publications
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a large and diverse interdisciplinary research team
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with spectroscopy techniques such as absorbance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, or IR spectroscopy
- Experience with basic characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, ICP-MS, Chromatography, X-ray diffraction, etc.)
- Experience with high temperature hydrothermal experimental techniques
- Experience with geochemical thermodynamic modeling
- Experience with data management and processing
Education: Completion of a bachelor's degree and acceptance into a graduate degree program. Cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2 is required.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
