What You Will Do

Join Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (NMCA) and bring your passion and knowledge of radioactive materials, nuclear measurements and statistics to help deter and detect theft and diversion of accountable special nuclear materials (SNM). Nuclear material security problem-solving experience and the ability to think like the 'bad guy' is a plus. No two days are the same in this fast-paced and challenging position that directly contributes to Los Alamos National Laboratory's nuclear material safeguards mission. This position will be filled at either the Material Control & Accountability Technical Specialist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Material Control & Accountability Technical Specialist 1 $76,900 - $122,200

The Material Control & Accountability Technical Specialist 1 will provide operational and programmatic support related to the measurement of special nuclear materials. The MC&A Technical Specialist is an essential function that provides independent verification and validation of non-destructive assay (NDA) measurements used to demonstrate nuclear material control and accountability.

Material Control & Accountability Technical Specialist 2 $92,300 - $151,000

The Material Control & Accountability Technical Specialist 2, will provide independent verification and validation of non-destructive assay (NDA) measurements used to demonstrate nuclear material control and accountability; supports the qualification of measurement systems used to perform measurements of accountable nuclear materials, and supports response to facility operational events involving accountable nuclear material.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience solving problems using technically defensible methods to analyze data.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NDA measurement methods, such as gamma-ray spectroscopy, passive/active neutron counting, calorimetric assay and other non-destructive and destructive assay techniques used for the quantification of special nuclear materials.
  • Knowledge and understanding of statistical methods for data analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience in at least one of the following: Radiation detection and quantification, nuclear engineering, health physics or radiation physics and statistics.

Additional Job Requirements for Material Control & Accountability Technical Specialist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Experience and working knowledge of DOE/NNSA Nuclear Material Control & Accountability requirements (DOE Orders).
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and statistical analysis software, such as SAS, JMP and R-integration.

Education/Experience at Material Control & Accountability Technical Specialist 1 level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of related experience. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Education/Experience at Material Control & Accountability Technical Specialist 2 level: Positions requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of related experience. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience performing non-destructive assay (NDA) measurements in both laboratory and in-situ settings.
  • Experience in the implementation of measurement control programs for both destructive and non-destructive assay methods used in the quantification of nuclear material.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear material accountability and control policies, practices and procedures.
  • Experience working in one of the following: nuclear facility operations, nuclear material control and accountability, or chemical/physical processes associated with nuclear material processing.
  • Experience generating concise and accurate reports, writing technical procedures, technical data analysis and communicating technical information utilizing presentations for a diverse, technical and nontechnical audience.
  • Understanding of measurement uncertainties and propagation of variance applications and the reconciliation of nuclear material inventory differences.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
