The primary core tasks of the Health and Safety Technician will be to promote safety, security, and quality in all operations; promote teamwork within and across the Laboratory; collaborate with other members of Industrial Safety and Hygiene Deployed construction safety team and promote a positive work environment while delivering exceptional customer service.
The Health and Safety Tec will assist daily with industrial hygiene and safety support primarily for construction projects to ensure the protection of workers, compliance with Laboratory ES&H requirements, and mission success. The Health and Safety Tec 3 will participate health and safety inspections and investigations to assist in determining deficiencies that require corrective action, report results, and recommend corrective actions. The Health and Safety Tec assists workers in the implementation of integrated work management by gaining an understanding of operations, participating in pre-job walk-downs and pre-job safety briefs, and conducting periodic oversight to ensure compliance. This position is an opportunity for a motivated, innovative, and customer focused individual to support an established Group in the Occupational Safety and Health Deployed Services Group.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- General knowledge of OSHA requirements, NFPA life safety code, and code of federal regulations 1910 CFR General Industry, 1926 CFR Safety and Health Regulations for Construction, and other relevant health and safety regulations and requirements.
- General knowledge of Laboratory and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to industrial hygiene/safety.
- Working knowledge and experience with health and safety controls and the surveillance of related safety measures and requirements.
- Working knowledge and experience with industrial hygiene/safety-related risk assessments and corrective actions.
- Working knowledge of common and unique work hazards, occupational safety practices, and safe operating configurations.
- Ability to research information sources for health effects data applicable to work operations (i.e., safety data sheets, regulations, standards, other agencies, and experts).
- Ability to use automation applications (i.e., spreadsheets, graphics, database management, communication practices, compliance tracking systems).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.
Education/Experience: This position requires a minimum of a High School Diploma and 2-4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical institute graduate or associate degree may be preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
- Working knowledge, and demonstrated application, of DOE requirements related to industrial hygiene and safety.
- Broad knowledge of LANL organizations, operations, and activities.
- Knowledge and application of LANL ESH requirements, including Integrated Work Management and other industrial hygiene and safety procedures.
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
