DP-3 Group Leader, Detonator Production Manufacturing (Manufacturing Manager 4)

What You Will Do

Detonator Production (DP) is seeking a highly qualified candidate to be the Group Leader to manage and lead the Division's manufacturing group, DP-MFG. The DP-MFG group leader provides leadership and management for a group of approximately 30 talented technicians executing manufacturing operations to produce War Reserve detonators. The DP-MFG group leader reports directly to the DP Division Leader.

DP Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate. DP is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on challenging National security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security.

The successful DP-3 Group leader will provide effective personnel management while leading high fidelity, high-consequence detonator production operations. The operations include high explosives, classified security assets, VTR (Vault Type Room) operations, and electro-explosive assembly operations while upholding the highest quality directives for nuclear weapons components. Further, the successful candidate will uphold the highest standards for a respectful workplace, employee development, work control, safety, security, quality excellence, teaming, and customer service. Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership: Demonstrated accomplishments applying DP and Laboratory Values and Behaviors while guiding high-consequence manufacturing activities successfully meeting deliverables and major milestones; through sound coaching practices developing staff and creating an environment of continuous learning

Management: Record of accomplishment leading technical personnel in a challenging production manufacturing environment. Ability to provide personnel with effective career coaching and career development.

Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated technical accomplishment in producing precision, high-consequence products coupled with a strong understanding of the underlying materials, processes, manufacturing methods and quality considerations to uphold reliable and predictable manufacturing operations. Demonstrated ability to implement manufacturing process improvements in a disciplined, orderly approach.

Technical Experience: Demonstrated experience in electro-explosive device product qualification within the nuclear weapons enterprise.

Manufacturing Experience: Demonstrated experience in inventory management system(s), workflow process and tooling development, measurement and inspection methods, and/or development and implementation of manufacturing processes for electro-explosive devices. Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking skills to manufacturing process challenges, high level of organizational skills and attention to detail.

Strategic Planning: Experience planning and defining project scope through collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs) and project managers. Working knowledge and experience in supporting tactical and strategic planning.

Communication: Ability to convey clear, unambiguous directions to technical personnel, as well as with all levels of DP staff and external organizations. Have strong interpersonal, presentation, and written skills; demonstrated by effective briefings, and presentations.

Customer Focus: Demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Material Handling: Knowledge as a High Explosive (HE) Handler and/or familiarity with DOE standards for High Explosives safety (DOE-STD-1212).

Nature of Work: Demonstrated experience in a nuclear weapon complex component manufacturing environment for development, qualification, and WR (War Reserve) products. Familiarity and/or experience with DOE National Security Enterprise sites and business practices. Familiarity with DOE classification directives and management of security assets. Familiarity and record of achievement applying concepts of DOE Conduct of Operations directives, experience working in DOE high explosives or nuclear facility settings.

Program requirements: Demonstrated experience with the Defense Programs Business Process System requirements, including the product realization process. Familiarity with NNSA Weapon Quality Policy NAP 401.1A or similar quality standards is highly desired.

Desired education: Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline such as manufacturing, mechanical, materials, nuclear, aerospace or chemical engineering is desired. A Master of Science degree in an engineering discipline is preferred.

Clearance: Active Q Clearance is preferred

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
