This position will be filled at either the ESH Professional 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
ESH Professional 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)
The ESH Professional will work in the Hazardous Energy & Operations Group (HEO) of the Occupational Safety & Health Division (OSH) as an Electrical Inspector (EI). The EI's primary responsibility is to assist in the implementation of the OSH-HEO facility electrical inspection program under the direction of the Chief Electrical Inspector. The EI will assist in the implementation of the OSH-HEO facility electrical inspection program; inspect facility electrical installations; clarify and provide field interpretations of electrical codes, standards, and requirements. The EI will review new and upgraded facility plans, designs, and specifications to ensure compliance with NEC and other applicable electrical codes and standards and provide documented reviews; and keep records of all inspections, including the date of such inspections and a summary of any violations found to exist, and a record of the final disposition of all violations.
ESH Professional 3 ($114,700 - $191,200)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at the higher level the ESH Professional will:
- Serve as a recognized subject matter expert (SME) in electrical inspection and compliance, providing authoritative technical guidance and advanced interpretation of electrical codes, standards, and Laboratory requirements.
- Independently plan, prioritize, and conduct complex electrical inspections and programmatic design reviews, applying advanced professional concepts and broad experience to develop innovative solutions to novel or systemic issues.
- Lead or mentor other electrical inspectors, coordinating inspection activities, ensuring consistency in code application, and contributing to the development and improvement of Laboratory electrical safety policies, procedures, and training materials
- Provide expert consultation to engineers, designers, facility managers, and construction personnel to resolve complex compliance challenges and ensure alignment with Laboratory and regulatory objectives.
- Exercise substantial independent judgment and initiative in determining methods, strategies, and procedures to achieve electrical safety program goals, and advise management on performance, risk reduction, and continuous improvement opportunities across multiple facilities.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- A minimum of six years of working knowledge and demonstrated experience in the electrical trade such as electrical inspector, journeyman electrician, master electrician, facility electrical engineer, or electrical contractor.
- Working knowledge of and demonstrated experience of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and working knowledge of the standard materials and methods used in the installation of electrical equipment.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70E requirements.
- Understanding of common and unique work hazards, occupational safety practices, operating configurations, and lockout/tagout policies and procedures.
- Ability to interpret and apply requirements from drawings, blueprints, schematics, and technical documents related to electrical systems.
- Proven skill in effectively communicating and collaborating with diverse groups, including craft personnel, engineers, project and construction managers, safety professionals, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.
Additional Job Requirements for ESH Professional 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Advanced knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E, and the standard materials, methods, and practices used in the installation and inspection of electrical systems and equipment.
- Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local electrical safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, and the ability to interpret and apply these requirements to complex electrical inspection and compliance situations.
- Extensive experience in problem-solving and issue management, including researching alternatives, developing innovative solutions, and documenting and implementing recommendations.
- Advanced ability to understand and interpret physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics, and to apply this understanding to ensure code compliance and electrical safety.
- Advanced ability to effectively communicate complex ESHQ and electrical safety principles to technical and non-technical personnel, and to collaborate successfully with craft personnel, engineers, project management, construction management, safety professionals, and other stakeholders.
Training/Certifications: Hold a certification of the International Code Council (ICC) or the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI).
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A which requires a Baccalaureate degree, 2 years of job-related experience, and 1-year nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable sections of the LANL Engineering Standards Manual, specifications, and related Laboratory directives.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing new and modified facility electrical plans, designs, and specifications to ensure compliance with the NEC, NFPA 70E, and other applicable electrical codes and standards.
- Experience working in nuclear or high-hazard facilities with a strong understanding of the associated electrical safety, configuration management, and conduct of operations requirements.
- Familiarity with the LANL Electrical Safety Program or equivalent DOE Laboratory electrical safety programs, policies, and procedures.
- Proficiency with office automation and data management tools, including spreadsheets, databases, and inspection tracking systems.
- Proven ability to serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing authoritative technical guidance and recommendations that influence Laboratory electrical safety policies, standards, and program development.
- Completion of Electrical Safety Officer (ESO) training or equivalent DOE electrical safety training and qualification.
- Active DOE Q Clearance.
Essential Job Functions: (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
