Engineer Technologist

What You Will Do

The Power Supply Production Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an exceptional Engineering Technologist (ET) to join our team. The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop and transition new production processes and methods to production, lead continuous improvement efforts, evaluate process data, develop and implement detailed operating procedures for various operations within the PF-4 facility. Development and production activities require working in a team environment with other engineers, scientists and technicians within the LANL, DOE, DoD, and other institutions.

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or Engineering Technologist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Technologist 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)
  • Computer-aided Design
  • Working knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design.
  • Working understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principals, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent.
  • Working understanding of ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.
  • Mechanical/Machining
  • Working knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods
  • Working understanding of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical or electrical disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.
  • Working understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, facility equipment, and M&TE.
  • Working understanding of engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Creo Parametric and PDMLink.
  • Knowledge and experience in weapon design or manufacturing
  • Active DOE "Q" clearance (or equivalent).
  • Enrollment in HRP.
  • A current ASME GDTP Technologist level certification to ASME Y14.5-2009.

Education and Experience
  • Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Engineering Technologist 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)

Minimum Job Requirements:

In addition to above level 2.

Mechanical Design Experience
  • Expert level experience in original design of components and assemblies using Creo (or similar alternative).

Design Expertise
  • Expert knowledge and experience working within both conceptual and formal design process environments, as well as full design package development for manufacturing.
  • Advanced experience interacting with engineers and physicists to develop concepts.
  • You must have expert knowledge in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Expert knowledge of product data management systems (e.g., Windchill PDMLink) for managing CAD files.

Leadership Experience:
  • Experience leading others through design oversight. Experience mentoring others related to mechanical design and fabrication.
  • Must have the ability to interact effectively with team members and management.

Project Facilitation:
  • Ability to meet schedule deadlines and deliverables for multiple assigned projects.
  • Must have the ability to develop and foster successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems.

Teamwork:
  • Strong teamwork skills, with experience collaborating in diverse groups to develop innovative designs from rough sketches, often with minimal guidance from senior technicians.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working with complex mathematical formulas.
  • Experience of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides.

Education/Experience:
  • Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • Experience of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
