The Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) group (Q-7) is seeking an experienced Engineering Technologist 1 or Engineering Technolgist 2 to fulfill a broad range of challenging assignments in support of the GTS mission. The successful candidate will be highly organized, self-motivated, proficient in multitasking, and capable of working across disciplines. This role will directly support enduring stockpile activities, next generation weapons R&D, GTS surveillance activities, hydro shot support, selected weapon safety enhancement work, and materials investigations.
As the design authority for Gas Transfer Systems (Q-7), our team provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy innovative gas transfer technologies critical to the nation's nuclear deterrent. The Q-7 team consists of engineers, technologists, and technicians engaged in interdisciplinary projects spanning conceptual development through system deployment and mission execution.
In this Engineering Technologist role, you will work in the Stockpile Systems and Testing laboratory. You will work as a member of a team to design, fabricate, assemble, and execute experiments. Additionally, you will be responsible for the upkeep of the laboratory and equipment to ensure that capabilities are maintained. In this fast paced-environment, you will be expected to learn a diverse range of operations and pieces of equipment to perform work that may involve high pressures and explosives. The successful candidate must be able to work independently.
This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineering Technologist 1 ($85,900 - $139,900)
- Assist with technical research and data gathering to support engineering projects.
- Utilize basic CAD software and industrial control software to prepare and review technical drawings and documentation.
- Support product, system, and equipment design, development, and production processes.
- Perform routine technical problem-solving applying foundational engineering and scientific principles.
- Provide technical direction to drafting personnel ensuring accuracy and completeness of designs.
Engineering Technologist 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:
- Independently manage complex technical problems utilizing advanced principles, theories, and methodologies.
- Develop comprehensive project plans, specifications, and schedules for equipment and system implementation.
- Provide advanced technical leadership, mentoring junior technologists and ensuring adherence to design criteria.
- Perform sophisticated technical analyses and computations, integrating multiple engineering disciplines.
- Conduct detailed evaluations and feasibility studies for systems and technologies.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Ability to obtain a 'Q' Clearance.
- Experience with engineering principles, theories, and computational methods.
- Basic knowledge of computer-aided drafting (CAD) techniques.
- Ability to perform routine calculations and data analyses to support engineering tasks.
- Working knowledge of standard engineering and office software (e.g., AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite).
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Advanced proficiency with CAD modeling, analytical software, and industrial control systems.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and resolve complex technical issues independently.
- Extensive experience in detailed technical documentation, design specifications, and engineering evaluations.
- Proven capability to lead technical teams and mentor junior staff.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with pressure systems and leak checking techniques.
- Experience in the application of strain gauges, accelerometers, and pressure transducers.
- Experience in formal CAD modeling and drafting requirements.
- Experience in the implementation of LabVIEW control and instrumentation systems.
- Experience with safe handling practices of energetic materials and explosives.
- Systems Knowledge: Experience in the assembly, calibration, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electronic measurement systems and subsystems; experience with computer-controlled test operations and preparation of test reports.
- Experience with mechanical design, fabrication, and assembly techniques.
- Experience with lifting and hoisting equipment.
- Knowledge of nuclear weapons concepts and the U.S. stockpile or other weapon designs.
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL safety policies, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of systems engineering and requirements management principles and processes.
- Experience with drafting tools such as AutoCAD, Visio, etc.
- Understanding of schematics and hardware configurations.
- Experience in electro-mechanical and optical hardware, including handling optical cables/connectors and testing optical fiber runs.
- Experience participating in hazard analysis reviews.
- Experience with weapon component design, fabrication, assembly techniques, and advanced fabrication processes.
- Experience with professional-level photography equipment, including understanding focal length, aperture, and depth-of-field.
- Experience with nanosecond-accuracy timing and measurement systems and instruments.
- Ability to solder wires/connectors.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
