The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO) and the RCMR group at Los Alamos National Laboratory are seeking an Engineering Technologist. In this position, successful candidates will apply the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics, and science to solve technical problems within their discipline in support of engineering projects and research activities. They will assist in planning and executing assignments that require initiative, analytical ability, and sound technical judgment. The technologist will support work related to facility design, operation, maintenance, project execution, and/or research-based engineering. They must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, using engineering and computer technologies to complete tasks efficiently and accurately while continuously
seeking opportunities to improve processes and deliver quality results.
The technologist will ensure compliance with all safety and security requirements, maintain required training, and integrate safety and security into every task, including stopping work if continuing is unsafe or compromises security. The technologist will apply established engineering principles, theories, and techniques to perform technical assignments, resolve routine design issues, and support the development of project specifications and evaluations. They will contribute to studies that define and assess design criteria for systems, structures, and equipment; assist in preparing and reviewing technical documentation; and participate in technical research and data collection in support of engineering analyses. This role includes preparing or reviewing CAD drawings, performing calculations, and using analytical and scientific software to solve engineering problems. The technologist may provide technical directions to design and drafting personnel, support bid evaluations, and recommend actions on client requests or design changes. Lastly, the incumbent must adhere to Laboratory engineering policies, procedures, and standards while fostering a respectful, inclusive, and harassment-free work environment.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Working knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling, and design
- Sound knowledge of mathematical formulas, computations, and data gathering methods
- Working knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods
- Understanding of engineering principles, design, and systems technology within the assigned discipline
- Familiarity with relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides
- Knowledge of industry, regulatory, and DOE/NNSA codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the engineering discipline
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience supporting large or multidisciplinary engineering projects
- Familiarity with Laboratory project control processes, cost estimates, or change management procedures
- Experience preparing or reviewing engineering change orders or technical documentation
- Proficiency in additional or advanced analytical, modeling, or visualization software beyond standard CAD tools
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in team-based technical environments
- Demonstrated commitment to process improvement, innovation, and continuous learning
- Interest in contributing to mission-driven engineering solutions that support national security objectives

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Environment: Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
