The Engineering Services - Fire Protection Engineering (ES-FPE) group of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is the Laboratory's central fire protection engineering and program support entity, responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Lab's nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. ES-FPE is seeking Fire Protection Engineers (Nuclear Facilities Engineers) to provide oversight of activities at LANL Plutonium Facilities and nuclear facilities operations, provide subject matter guidance, review designs, inspect construction, and manage fire hazards and risks.
This position will be filled at either Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but duties are not necessarily limited to: Providing fire protection and life safety subject matter expert (SME) technical support to the laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations; construction project support, plan review and approval; Lab-wide fire alarm system operations and maintenance; fire protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing and maintenance oversight; preparation of equivalencies and exemptions, development of equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes; and technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 ($125,200 - $211,300)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the primary duties of this position include sustaining and monitoring fire protection engineering and loss prevention programs; facility and program fire protection assessment/surveillance program implementation; mentoring and technical leadership of staff; interface with nuclear facility safety basis professionals; and maintaining Laboratory fire protection engineering and maintenance standards. This position requires working with all levels of Laboratory management and representing the Division and Laboratory to internal customers, external agencies, and community organizations. As a senior level position, the candidate will review and recommend actions, and provide leadership on fire protection and loss prevention related issues for the Laboratory.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrative ability to perform detailed technical reviews of facility design documents including designs, plans, submittals, project specs and similar documents and provides effective, actionable comments
- Advanced experience in effectively communicating compliance concerns both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and/or craft personnel
- Expert experience in design or plans review of fire protection and life safety features of building and of fire protection systems, or experience in documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks of facilities or processes
- Proven leadership in supporting and mentoring more junior engineering staff
- Demonstrated leadership aptitude including clear focus on professional customer service, as well as regulatory compliance
- Experience in evaluating fire protection needs, concerns, and requirements to solve complex problems through creative problem solving and appropriate compromise
- Experience in developing processes, program, or project documentation to incorporate and/or implement fire protection or life safety objectives and criteria
Education/Experience at Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
NOTE: A candidate with a bachelor's degree in engineering technology may be considered for this position, based on management approval.
Education/Experience at Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
NOTE: A candidate with a bachelor's degree in engineering technology may be considered for this position, based on management approval.
Desired Qualifications:
- Active Q Clearance
- Familiarity with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards as they relate to fire protection
- Certification as Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Plans Examiner, and/or Certified Fire Inspector (NFPA or ICC)
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration
- Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly-protected risks (HPR), such as FM Global datasheets, or AXA XL property risk guidelines
- Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard, and nuclear facilities. Note: Nuclear/ radiological experience is desired but not required
- Reactor or nonreactor nuclear facility experience
- Knowledge of DOE-O-420.1C, DOE-STD-1066, LANL Engineering Standards Manual, and Conduct of Engineering (CoE) work principles
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
