Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) invites you to join our Engineering Services-Fire Protection Systems (ES-FPS) team. The Fire Protection Specialist 3/4 will assist in coordinating one or more elements of the Laboratory fire protection program, including suppression and alarm systems operations in compliance with current codes and standards, Department of Energy (DOE) orders, and best industry practice. Specific duties may include conducting facility surveillances, assisting with site-wide fire alarm operations, or reviewing authorization basis documentation as it relates to fire protection and fire hazards analysis documents. Assists in researching information for fire protection, and code compliance related activities. This professional position is primarily concerned with aspects related to fire protection; life safety; property loss prevention; inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm and fire suppression systems; and tracking results of facility ITM efforts, impairment coordination with some field work.
This position will be filled at either the Fire Protection Specialist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Fire Protection Specialist 3 ($85,900 - $139,900)
The Fire Protection Specialist 3 will be required to:
- Design, plan review/approval and commissioning of complex building fire detection and alarm systems.
- Develop and maintain stand-alone fire alarm receiving system computer/server network and facility fire detection and alarm system operations and maintenance procedures.
- Communicate the results of fire detection and alarm system design to project managers, project/facility engineers and facility managers.
- Assist in the research for responses to fire alarm system-related queries by internal and external entities.
- Significant experience performing fire detection and alarm system design, record management, and design drawing specification documentation completion.
- Apply working knowledge of automatic sprinkler, special hazard, fire pump, and ventilation systems to support the design, operation, and integration of fire detection and alarm systems.
- Design, modify, program, and test fire detection and alarm systems.
- Apply knowledge of International Building and Fire Codes (IBC/IFC), NFPA standards, and life safety regulations to ensure fire detection and alarm systems comply with code requirements and promote loss prevention.
- Perform operations, maintenance, testing, and surveillance of stand-alone computer and server network systems to ensure optimal performance, security, and reliability.
- Communicate effectively through excellent oral and written skills, including delivering clear and engaging presentations.
- Manage multiple assignments and activities simultaneously to ensure timely and efficient completion of tasks and projects.
The Fire Protection Specialist 4 will be required to:
- Leads fire protection- and loss prevention-related organizational strategies, goals, and metrics. Determines their effectiveness and future modifications when necessary.
- Represents the Laboratory to enforcement agencies, other DOE laboratories, and community organizations.
- Reviews and analyzes concerns and possible complaints and takes or recommends corrective action where needed.
- Respond to unique, one-of-a-kind external/internal requests for information and/or documents relating to worker health and safety, fire protection, and loss prevention issues and inquiries.
- Serves as an audit liaison for the fire protection program and responds to inquiries from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Inspector General (IG), Department of Energy (DOE), and/or Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB).
- Takes the lead in developing reports to meet management needs at all levels and in response to external inquiries.
- Takes the lead in developing the Laboratory's annual reports, pre-incident planning, authorization basis documents or other studies.
- Serves as the lead liaison in developing fire protection and loss prevention performance goals and objectives for the institution.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Experience working in a complex organization of diverse operations, combined with a demonstrated ability to function collaboratively with varying teams.
- Experience working with customers in fire protection disciplines with proven ability in reading and interpreting policy and regulation documents. Proven ability in providing professional guidance in interpreting regulations and policies to ensure compliance. Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining documents such as procedures, forms, templates, and/or plans.
- Proficient in the use of common computer-based software, shared database applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe Products, Access, Outlook, Oracle, etc.). Experienced in leading professional communications and meetings with personnel at all levels, including external interfaces and management. Ability to provide consultative customer service to both internal and external customers. Skilled in written and oral communication that conveys consideration for the unique needs of different audiences.
- Experience with appropriate fire and sprinkler design qualifications, plans examiner experience or certifications, code inspector experience or certification.
- NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist curriculum completion within one year of hire date.
Education/Experience at Fire Protection Specialist 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

- NICET Qualifications or Certification
- Recognized Fire Alarm or Sprinkler Design certifications
- Experience as Team or Program Lead
- Experience working under DOE Order 420.1C, DOE Order 1066, and DOE Order 151.1D
- Knowledge of NFPA 1620, Standard for Pre-Incident Planning
- Knowledge of NFPA 1660, Standard for Emergency, Continuity, and Crisis Management: Preparedness, Response, and Recovery
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which couldinvolve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position at the higher level is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
