Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) invites you to join our Engineering Services - Fire Protection Systems (ES-FPS) team. ES-FPS serves as LANL's authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for fire protection-related codes, standards, and recommended practices. This position will support the ES-FPS Manager with task level duties to include impairment coordination, fire alarm systems design, and some field work.
This position will be filled at either the Fire Protection Specialist 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Fire Protection Specialist 1 ($71,200 - $112,900)
As a Fire Protection Specialist 1 working with Fire Protection Systems, you will use your professional fire protection knowledge, skills and ability supporting one of the largest and most diverse directorates at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Under the direction of the ES-FPS Group Leader, this position's primary role is to support the Fire Protection Systems Group in alarm design, sprinkler design, and impairment resolution. Additional duties will include, but are not limited to, FOD support, ES-FP overlap and backfill duties, and database maintenance.
The selected candidate will:
- Apply fire protection, loss prevention, life safety, and worker health and safety-related codes, standards and guidance to Laboratory facilities through the performance of fire protection assessments/inspections
- Identify fire and life safety hazards within and exposed structures through facility assessments/inspections using NFPA, IFC and industry codes and standards, and develop corrective recommendations
- Assist in the planning, coordinating and execution of the LANL facility impairment program
- Learn and understand LANL specific fire alarm and sprinkler design criteria
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Fire Protection Specialist 2 will be held responsible for planning, performance, and documentation of facility fire protection and life safety reports to be completed in compliance with current LANL policies and procedures, NFPA codes and standards, DOE Orders and best industry practices. The individual will also assist facility management organizations with implementation of the LANL fire protection program and remedies to impairments, and recommendations in an advice and consent role.
The selected candidate will:
- Prepare correspondence as a significant deliverable of the LANL impairment management program
- Assist in the research for responses to fire protection program-related queries by internal and external entities
- Represent ES-FPS management through interaction with external agencies and/or community organizations on issues related to fire protection and life safety
- Utilize document management systems such as SharePoint for the purposes of posting, researching and retrieving documentation

Operational Functions
Demonstrated experience working with customers in fire protection disciplines with proven ability in reading and interpreting policy and regulation documents. Proven ability in providing professional guidance in interpreting regulations and policies to ensure compliance. Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining documents such as procedures, forms, templates, and/or plans.
Computer Business Systems
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of common computer-based software, shared database applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe Products, Access, Outlook, Oracle, etc.).
Communication/Customer Service
Demonstrated ability leading professional communications and meetings with all levels of personnel, including external interfaces and management. Ability to provide consultative customer service to internal and external customers. Skilled written and oral communication that convey consideration for the unique needs of different audiences.
Technical Expertise
Demonstrated experience with appropriate fire and sprinkler design qualifications, plans examiner experience or certifications, Code Inspector experience or certification.
Training/Certifications
NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist curriculum completion within one year of hire date.
Education/Experience at Fire Protection Specialist 1: Position requires a minimum of 2 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at Fire Protection Specialist 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and a minimum 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- DOE Q-Clearance
- Experience with LANL policy and procedures.
- Understanding of LANL Facility Operations Directorate
- Experience working under DOE Standard 1066, DOE Order 420.1C
- Firefighting Experience
- NICET Qualifications or Certification
- Recognized Fire Alarm or Sprinkler Design certifications
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which couldinvolve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
