Licensing and Intellectual Property Project Leader

What You Will Do

The Licensing and Intellectual Property (IP) Project Leader at the Feynman Center for Innovation (FCI) will oversee the development and commercialization of cutting-edge technologies and intellectual property assets. As a Project Leader, you will manage specific projects focused on advancing U.S. national security and support mission-critical objectives at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

You will be responsible for developing and executing project plans, defining project scope, budget, and timelines, while leading a team of experts to achieve project objectives ensuring timely and successful delivery. Your work will involve close collaboration with internal researchers and external partners to align efforts to identify and mitigate project risks, coordinate with internal researchers and external partners to ensure alignment with LANL's mission and goals, and provide regular updates on project progress, risk mitigation, and key milestones to program offices and senior leadership.

Additionally, the Project Leader will manage the development and commercialization of a specific intellectual Property (IP) portfolio, including patents, software, and trademarks.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Project Management: Demonstrated experience in managing projects, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing scope, schedule, budget, and performance baselines, as well as documenting baseline reports and implementing change control actions.

Finance: Experienced ability managing project cost and schedule commitments.

Communication: Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written skills. Experience in building trust, gaining consensus and resolving conflicts across all levels of personnel. Skilled in delivering briefings, and presentations, and in fostering effective working relationships with internal team and external stakeholders to plan, lead and complete projects successfully.

Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of scientific and technical disciplines, including familiarity with relevant regulatory and institutional frameworks. Experience evaluating IP for commercial potential and managing related legal agreements.

Tools and Systems: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat. Familiarity with project or contract management systems.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM, business, legal, or related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with U.S. federal, DOE, and institutional technology transfer policies.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating technology licensing agreements.
  • Understanding of IP law and commercialization practices in collaboration with legal professionals.
  • Ability to identify commercial potential of emerging technologies and align them with market opportunities.
  • Professional certifications such as RTTP (Registered Technology Transfer Professional), CLP (Certified Licensing Professional), or USPTO Patent Agent credential.

Work Location:The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 -Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.


*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
