The Safeguards Science and Technology Group (NEN-1) within the Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division is seeking a motivated Research Tec 1 to provide technical support for our electronics laboratories and shops. You will work alongside engineers, scientists, and experienced technicians who design, assemble, test, modify, repair, and maintain specialized electronic equipment used in support of national security and nuclear nonproliferation missions.
A primary initial responsibility of this position will be supporting the implementation and continued development of a new electronic inventory system. Our electronics shops contain a wide variety of electronic components, printed circuit boards (PCBs), cables, tools, test equipment, and other technical items that must be identified, cataloged, labeled, organized, and stored appropriately. Success in this role requires organization, accuracy, persistence, and careful attention to detail.
As your knowledge and experience develop, you will also have opportunities to support electronics assembly, cable fabrication, equipment testing, troubleshooting and repair, procurement, and other technical activities associated with the day-to-day operation of an electronics laboratory.
Specific responsibilities may include:
- Locate and identify electronic components, PCBs, equipment, tools, and shop supplies.
- Enter and maintain accurate item descriptions, quantities, storage locations, part numbers, and other information in the electronic inventory system.
- Label, organize, and store inventory so that items can be efficiently located, issued, and replenished.
- Perform inventory verification and stock-level reviews and correct incomplete or inaccurate records under direction.
- Help establish and maintain consistent storage, labeling, and material-handling practices throughout the electronics shops.
- Assemble component kits and prepare parts, materials, cables, and equipment for electronics projects.
- Assemble basic mechanical and electronic equipment using common hand tools, drawings, procedures, and written assembly instructions.
- Fabricate and test basic cable assemblies, including preparing wire, installing connectors, crimping, soldering, labeling, and continuity testing after receiving appropriate training and instruction.
- Support basic testing, troubleshooting, repair, modification, and maintenance of electronic equipment under the supervision of experienced engineers and technicians.
- Assist with identifying, ordering, receiving, inspecting, and tracking electronic components, tools, equipment, and general shop supplies.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized electronics laboratories, workbenches, storage areas, and shared shop spaces.
- Conduct technical work in laboratory and shop environments as instructed and overseen by appropriate supervisory or technical personnel.
- Record procedures, equipment, parameters, findings, and data associated with assigned technical work.
- Learn to evaluate findings and data, develop preliminary interpretations, summarize outcomes, and assist in planning subsequent technical activities under supervision.
- Communicate inventory discrepancies, damaged equipment or materials, low stock levels, technical observations, and other issues to appropriate team members.
- Perform routine or semi-routine technical assignments under specific and detailed instructions and within established priorities, procedures, processes, requirements, and specifications.
This is an entry-level technician position. You will typically receive detailed and specific instructions and initially work primarily on routine tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Work will be performed under supervision and reviewed for overall adequacy, accuracy, and soundness of judgment.
The position provides an opportunity to develop greater technical knowledge and practical experience in electronics, inventory management, cable fabrication, equipment assembly, testing and repair, procurement, and the operation of an engineering laboratory.

Demonstrated ability to organize materials and maintain accurate and complete records. Ability to perform repetitive inventory and documentation activities carefully and consistently.
Computer Skills:
Basic experience using computers and standard software applications. Ability to learn an electronic inventory system and accurately enter, retrieve, and update information.
Technical and Hands-On Work:
Ability to learn and perform routine or semi-routine technical assignments using common hand tools and equipment while following detailed written or verbal instructions, drawings, procedures, processes, and specifications.
Documentation and Quality:
Ability to accurately record work activities, procedures, equipment, parameters, findings, and other relevant information. Ability to learn and follow established requirements so that work and final products meet applicable quality specifications.
Learning and Technical Development:
Ability and willingness to develop knowledge and skills in electronics, cable assembly, equipment testing and repair, inventory management, procurement, and shop operations under supervision.
Communication and Teamwork:
Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with engineers, scientists, technicians, students, administrative staff, and other Laboratory and facility personnel.

Understanding of the importance of safety, security, and quality-assurance practices and the ability to learn and implement the requirements applicable to assigned work.

Desired Qualifications:
- Experience organizing, labeling, cataloging, or maintaining parts, equipment, tools, or supplies.
- Experience with inventory databases, spreadsheets, data entry, or electronic recordkeeping.
- Coursework, employment, hobbies, volunteer activities, or practical experience involving electronics, robotics, automotive repair, fabrication, construction, manufacturing, logistics, or another hands-on technical field.
- Familiarity with electronic components, PCBs, cables, connectors, or common electronic test equipment.
- Experience using basic hand tools, crimping tools, soldering equipment, or other shop tools.
- Experience assembling, testing, troubleshooting, or repairing equipment, kits, computers, cables, or mechanical components by following written instructions or drawings.
- Familiarity with purchasing, receiving, shipping, inspecting, or tracking ordered materials.
- Interest in developing a career in electronics, engineering technology, manufacturing, logistics, or another technical field.

Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
