What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Production Control Specialist level 1 or level 2, depending on the skills and qualifications of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

DP (Detonator Production) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate, and is comprised of a team of motivated, highly-skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR detonator products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Weapon System Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on uniquely challenging, high-consequence National security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with peers, colleagues within the division, co-located organizations, and various support organizations. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating manufacturing operation improvements, working with the FLM to support production activities, championing process improvement, initiative implementation, and taking on special projects aimed at improving DP-3's manufacturing status quo.

This role reports directly to the DP-3 FLMs and GL and involves regular communication of project status, outcomes, and recommendations. It will require the ability to present information accurately and clearly in a formal manner to any level of management.

Production Control Specialist 1 $59,200 - $91,600

In this role, a highly motivated and detail-oriented professional will lead and execute special projects and targeted improvement initiatives.
  • Small Project Management: This position will be responsible for independently managing a small portfolio of strategic, high-impact assignments, often exploratory or developmental in nature, that support the Manufacturing Operation Teams' goals and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Manufacturing Experience: The ideal candidate will be aware of manufacturing operations and DP business practices and will demonstrate strong analytical and organizational skills, the ability to collaborate across all DP teams, and a results-driven mindset.
  • Hands on Manufacturing: In addition, this role will support hands-on production activities as needed and will provide SME-input as appropriate.

Production Control Specialist 2 $71,200 - $112,900
  • Autonomy/Initiative: In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidates should operate with a high degree of autonomy and be very familiar with DP operations and navigating DP projects.
  • Systematic Problem Solving: Largely independent, this selected candidate is responsible for identifying long-term and complex opportunities, shaping project scopes, aligning stakeholders, and delivering measurable outcomes that advance departmental and institutional objectives.
  • Leadership: The successful candidate will possess cross-team functional leadership and exceptional communication skills. with the position will require a demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, influence at all levels, and manage multiple initiatives concurrently.
  • Hands on Manufacturing: Supporting hand on production activities and training fellow teammates as needed. Providing SME input as appropriate.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Organizational Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of organizing information and project data in ways that are valuable for self-management and clear communication of status.

Project planning and control: Demonstrated experience in manufacturing operations control and improvement. Knowledge of resource planning and optimization practices as well as multi-organization resource integration processes.

Communication: Demonstrated skill with both written and oral communication. Able to communicate utilizing tact, diplomacy, discretion, and attention to detail. Experience communicating with customers and stakeholders, in particular, the groups relevant and related to DP-3.

Creativity: Demonstrated ability to think outside the box and find ways of improving the status quo and collaborate effectively with SMEs to develop solutions.

Trustworthy: Demonstrated ability to build relationships with the manufacturing team and across Detonator Production groups to build professional relationships and assess underlying problems which need to be solved to serve the mission at the Division level. Ability to perform tasks independently with a proactive mindset in alignment with future mission capabilities.

Hands On Safety: Experience and knowledge safely using hand tools, hydraulic presses, or laboratory equipment and instrumentation. Understanding of Con Ops, HPI practices, P300, and Pause/Stop work Authority.

Additional Job Requirements for Production Control Specialist 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Multifaceted Requirements: Experience interpreting and applying complex requirements in a weapons manufacturing, explosive, high hazard, or similar environment. Ability to utilize a suite of tools for planning, communicating, and tracking projects.

Demonstrated Autonomy: Demonstrated experience performing manufacturing operations improvement and special projects with a high degree of self-reliance and a proactive approach when identifying potential issues.

Presentation Skills: Ability to host and participate in cross functional meetings such as presenting project outcomes or collaborating with stakeholders for required input.

Policies and Procedure Application: Demonstrated ability to comply with policies, and specifically relating to inventory processes and procedures of weapons related items and weapons quality. Experience working with SOMS, records tracking, Teams Pages, and classified inventory database systems.

Safety Leadership: Ability to ensure hazards and controls are identified, addressed, and implemented in procedures and operations.

Education/Experience Production Control Specialist 1: Position requires a minimum of 2 years of related experience.

Education/Experience Production Control Specialist 2: Position requires 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Work Schedule:

Detonator Production work 4 x 10 hour shifts per week, Mon-Thurs from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
