This position will be filled at either the Science/Engineering Project Leader 2 or 3 level, based on the selected candidate's qualifications. Candidates selected at the higher level will assume additional leadership and strategic responsibilities as outlined below.

The Weapons Research Services (WRS) Division - is seeking a highly motivated Science/Engineering Project Leader to support critical national defense and space exploration missions within Weapons Mission Technology (WMT) Group. In this role, you will lead and execute complex scientific and engineering projects while contributing to the development of the next generation of nuclear engineers and scientists.
To support LANL's Weapons mission software toolsets, this position will serve on one or more software development projects. The WMT group is responsible for customizing, configuring, and maintaining large-scale implementations of product lifecycle and content management software packages. The Software Project Manager facilitates the timely completion of multiple initiatives with low to moderate levels of complexity and scope, as well as, having the responsibility for leading the overall vision and execution of a project, in accordance and while adhering to scientific and information technology policies, programs, procedures and practices.
Science/Engineering Project Leader 2 $104,100 - $172,200:
At this level you will manage moderately complex scientific or engineering IT projects, ensuring successful delivery within approved scope, schedule, and budget.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage scientific or engineering IT projects from initiation through completion, ensuring adherence to defined scope, schedule, budget, and performance baselines.
- Develop project plans, work breakdown structures, and detailed schedules; negotiate and define work packages to meet project deliverables.
- Lead and coordinate mid-sized, multidisciplinary project teams, providing direction in planning, execution, and performance tracking.
- Monitor project performance and manage changes using formal change-control processes.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks, and recommend appropriate risk acceptance or avoidance strategies.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for communicating project status, risks, and issues to management and stakeholders.
- Prepare and deliver project status reports, briefings, and visual materials for program managers, senior leadership, and the workforce.
Science/Engineering Project Leader 3 $125,200 - $211,300:
In addition to the responsibilities listed above, Project Leader 3 staff are expected to provide advanced leadership for large, complex projects with increased autonomy and strategic impact.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Exercise significant latitude in negotiating with program and line management to secure personnel, funding, procurement, and contracting resources required to meet project objectives.
- Provide leadership and direction to large, multidisciplinary project teams, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and mission objectives.
- Lead complex project planning activities, including scope definition, scheduling, budgeting, and execution strategies.
- Present project status, risks, and issues to Laboratory senior leadership, program managers, and external stakeholders, including federal and site office representatives.
- Engage directly with sponsors and customers to clearly communicate technical scope, risks, and progress, delivering consistent and credible messaging.

Experience monitoring performance metrics and stakeholder feedback to assess the effectiveness of communication and project execution strategies. Ability to apply data-driven analysis to recommend and implement continuous improvements within a production or operational environment.

Strong background in cross-functional collaboration across technical, operational, and management organizations. Demonstrated use of active listening, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills to resolve issues and meet customer and mission requirements.

Stakeholder Management
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, lead, and track complex tasks and deliverables to successful completion. Proven effectiveness interacting with personnel at all organizational levels to build trust, gain alignment, and resolve conflicts. Documented experience developing and implementing organizational strategies and objectives.
Leadership
Demonstrated leadership skills, including openness to feedback, ability to motivate teams, and effectiveness in negotiation. Demonstrated experience setting strategic direction and ensuring alignment between project execution and organizational goals. Proven ability to lead all phases of large, complex scientific or engineering projects, ensuring technical accuracy, quality, and mission success.
Education/Experience at Science/Engineering Project Leader 2: Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited institution, plus 5 years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree is typically expected.
Education/Experience at Science/Engineering Project Leader 3: Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited institution, plus 8 years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree is typically expected.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with LANL project management, production, or mission execution frameworks (preferred).
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Lean Six Sigma Certification.
- Experience with scheduling tools such as P6 and/or MS Project, cost estimating tools, and report development using Pivot Tables.
- Familiarity with Agile frameworks, tools, and techniques (Scrum, Kanban, CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins). Scrum Master and/or Product Owner certification a plus.
- Knowledge in one of more of the following areas: Product Data Management (PDM), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Manufacturing Data Management (MPM), Configuration Management, Content Management, and/or Requirements Management.
- Understanding of ITIL and IT Service management standard methodologies, exceptional customer service skills, and experience managing customer interactions.
- Understanding of the Nuclear Security Enterprise's (NSE) Design Agency (DA) and Production Agency (PA) roles, relationships, and system integrations.
- Active DOE Q Clearance.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
