The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group is looking for a software R&D engineer to help develop new software, data management and data analysis solutions, enhance software performance, support program functionality, and champion the reliability of our systems.
J-Division addresses national security challenges by executing mission-driven, large-scale, integrated experiments, emphasizing sub-critical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, focused experiments, and tests of engineered systems. The Division develops the workforce, facilities, technologies, and systems necessary to generate, analyze, and disseminate unique, high-quality data with integrity and scientific excellence. J-Division uses professional engineering management, and Formality of Operations and Conduct of Engineering processes, to integrate effectively high-fidelity test objects, multiple diagnostic technologies, sophisticated experiment design, and multi-disciplinary teams assembled across organizational boundaries. The Division executes its responsibilities in a sustainable, safe, secure, reliable, and environmentally responsible manner. J-Division operates the DARHT facility and operates or utilizes other LANL firing sites and facilities. The Division collaborates to execute sub-critical and other integrated experiments at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and NNSA, DOE, and partner organization facilities as needed.
As a full-time research and development engineer, specializing in computing environments and software development, you will work in a highly dynamic and collaborative environment and will be evaluated on both the quality of your work and on how well it integrates into the success of simultaneous projects around DARHT. You will work with a team to develop, calibrate, maintain, and upgrade the DARHT accelerator diagnostics system hardware including supporting existing and developing new analysis methods and applications. You will also help develop and support a comprehensive asset management system for the DARHT facility. This position will be filled at the R&D Engineer 1 level.
Your responsibilities will include analyzing and solving problems associated with the software, hardware, applications, operating systems, and all other aspects of a modern production controls system environment. Assignments range between programming, scripting, troubleshooting, and system configuration, as well as providing ongoing support to other accelerator teams with a high level of service quality, and documenting and presenting results.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Ability to develop and maintain technical documentation.
- Experience working as a member of a project team.
- Willingness to learn and adapt quickly in a dynamic environment
- Availability for on-call support and after-hours work when required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity with the software engineering lifecycle.
- Programming experience with compiled languages including C++ and/or Java.
- Experience with scripting languages such as bash, Python, IDL, and/or MATLAB.
- Understanding of software build processes, makefiles, and software revision control using git.
- Familiarity with Linux systems and tools.
- Familiarity with software troubleshooting techniques.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of computer operations, diagnostic control, and data acquisition.
- Experience with SQL relational database schemas, queries, and optimization thereof.
- Experience installing, developing, and providing support for secure deployment of web-based applications including integration of web authentication methods.
- Experience using and developing asset management software/databases.
- Linux system and network administration experience.
- Experience with design, calibration and analysis of diagnostics for accelerator, radiation, and/or pulsed power systems.
- Familiarity with accelerator operations or similar, large-scale scientific facility operations.
- Experience working under formal conduct of operations, in a large-scale, complex facility such as a charged-particle accelerator, nuclear reactor, chemical reactor, or actinide operations.
- Active Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.
