Undergraduate Research Associate (single level)

What You Will Do

The Nuclear Materials Science Group (MST-16) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has one project management student opening.

MST-16 is an international leader in plutonium science and engineering and supports a wide range of fundamental and applied programs important to US interests in energy and national security. Programmatic work includes Plutonium Sustainment, Pit Surveillance, Science Programs, Life Extension Programs, Advanced Certification, various global security programs, and Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) projects. The group maintains multidisciplinary expertise in actinide materials science and engages in areas important to Laboratory missions, including material characterization, phase stability, mechanical and dynamic properties, materials aging, electronic structure, corrosion, and surface science. Our work takes place in the Plutonium Facility (PF-4), the Radiological Laboratory/Utility/Office Building (RLUOB), the Target Fabrication Facility (TFF), and numerous other facilities at LANL and across the country.

Successful candidates will focus on applying business and project management principles to programmatic work scope in MST-16. This includes developing work packages, estimating budgets, and tracking deliverables. The selected student will partner with an experienced mentor who will provide guidance and feedback throughout the course of the internship.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Project) or other project management software.
  • Basic knowledge for developing and maintaining project plans, including areas such as work scope, schedule, and budgets, or in developing financial management plans.
  • Basic knowledge of project management tools and processes and information systems
  • Effective and collaborative communication skills


Education/Experience:
  • Currently enrolled (12 semester credit hours or full-time equivalent) in an accredited undergraduate degree-granting program (or international equivalent)
  • Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
  • Entering first-year students must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an accredited undergraduate degree program.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience managing projects and developing budgets.
  • Proven ability to foster effective customer relationships and interact effectively with all levels of personnel, building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
