The Dynamic Structure Design & Engineering (J-2) Group is seeking an R&D Manager 4 to serve as Group Leader and partner with our management team to make important contributions to our national security mission and help drive us toward a new and exciting future.
Your role will be that of vital leadership, ensuring the group meets goals and objectives through advanced research, development, engineering, experimental testing, operational excellence, next generation workforce development, and technical project management.
J-2 is one of four groups within the Integrated Weapons Experiments Division (J) that has the overall responsibility for fielding and execution of high consequence experiments at the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility at LANL and at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). J-2 develops engineering standards, designs, and procures impulsively loaded vessels and structures in support of the HSEES (Hydrodynamic and Subcritical Experiment Execution Support) Program. The group also manages the confinement vessel program for the entire DOE Complex, including test execution at LANL and supporting vessel operations at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experiments (PULSE) at the NNSS.
The selected candidate will report to the J Division Leader and team with other management and staff to advance our capabilities in support of the Laboratory's national security mission. You will:
- Lead the management of the HSEES Vessel Strategy for the DOE Complex, ensuring safe, compliant, and effective design, procurement, and use of confinement vessels across LANL and PULSE facilities.
- Organize and guide research, engineering, and technical efforts, while collaborating with peers and leaders on strategic planning.
- Facilitate hiring, mentoring staff, and building strong technical teams to fulfill mission objectives.
- Contribute to the DARHT sustainment effort and concepts for DARHT modernization as part of the DCX strategy.
- Apply your creativity and expertise to make lasting contributions to efforts directly influencing national security.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Leadership
- Demonstrated and extensive experience leading large technical complex organizations, including mechanical engineering focused teams, and multidisciplinary personnel responsible for facility operations.
- Extensive experience developing, implementing, and managing complex R&D and experimental projects, with the ability to successfully manage schedules and budgets.
- Proven track record to build, mentor, and motivate high-performing teams. Skilled in mentoring, motivating, and retaining top technical talent to achieve strategic goals.
- Significant experience recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and developing staff.
- Ability to foster collaboration across organizations while resolving conflicts and building consensus.
- Deep knowledge and practical experience applying Conduct of Engineering (CoE) principles, including engineering rigor, configuration management, technical baseline control, and formal design reviews, with direct experience applying consensus engineering codes and standards.
- Demonstrated expertise in Conduct of Operations (CoOp) within high-consequence environments, with a strong track record of integrating safety, hazard identification, tiered controls, and industrial hygiene practices into daily operations.
- Proven ability to develop, implement and enforce technical procedures, training staff, and ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and mission assurance requirements.
- Highly skilled in conveying complex technical, operational and programmatic information clearly to staff, management, senior leadership, and external stakeholders.
- Experience preparing high-quality reports, documentation, and presentations to support decision-making and align with institutional and regulatory expectations.
- Demonstrated ability in conflict resolution, consensus-building, and transparent communication in high-stakes environments.
- Proven success in building trust, fostering collaboration, and maintaining strong professional relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with development and usage of confinement vessel systems and consensus codes such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,
- Experience with stockpile stewardship and weapons design.
- Experience in setup and execution of dynamic experiments.
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance as it pertains to hazardous materials, personnel exposures, and waste streams
- Active DOE Q Clearance
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
